She couldn’t continue to lie to herself about what she saw in Cyrus’s eyes this evening. It was there as plain as day and bright as sunshine.

Cyrus looked at her like a woman.

She’d seen that sort of expression in Clarence’s eyes too many times for her to count but not once, had she ever seen it in Cyrus’s face.

Turning over in the bed, she stared out the window, seeing the shadow of the trees sway in the night wind. The more she thought about it, the more she’d begun to see things differently than she ever had.

Tonight, he had comforted her in the way she’d come to rely on. When her belief suffered, he was there to fill her up like water from a well. She’d always seen it from the perspective of a caring older brother who wanted to protect his sister.

Now, she had to see it in the way it was presented to her tonight.

Cyrus almost kissed her. She was as sure of that as she was of anything else.

He’d stood there, locked in some kind of silent battle as his hands cupped her face. She could see the desire there, like a small fire in the middle of a desert. But the flame was in his eyes. It had grown brighter and brighter, until only a thin ring of blue was left.

And she…well…she couldn’t help but feel an answering stir inside of her chest.

Gasping, she jerked to a sitting position in the bed she’d once shared with Clarence.

No, not once shared. Still shared with her husband.

Why was all of this happening? Why should Cyrus suddenly begin to consume her mind?

Knowing there was no way she could sleep now, she pushed the covers off her and padded over to the vanity and sat down.

Enough moonlight flowed through the window in order to see a murky, bluish glimpse of her reflection. The thick braids on either side of her head draped over her shoulders. She pulled distractedly at the end of one of them.

Once again, she heard his declaration: “I hate to see you cry but each time I have, it’s because I’ve been there by your side. And I have no intention of ever leaving it. You’re just stuck with me.”

Having seen the look of hunger in his face, she had to accept he’d meant more than just sibling togetherness.

Faith picked at the edge of her nightgown. What about her own wayward thoughts about Cyrus? She’d tried to fool herself into believing they were just…aberrations. She loved Clarence and she wished for his return more than anything.

But that didn’t explain how she was having these strange desires for Cyrus.

A blush heated the planes of her cheeks. She and he had spent most of the day together at the Festival. She’d no wish to leave his side. Why? Because she was dependent on him. Or, did she want to see what woman it was he was interested in?

Her mouth dropped open. Hints of his conversation from before became startling clear.
